Intellectual Property & Confidential Information

What is intellectual property?

Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind over which a person or entity may claim ownership. It includes ownership rights to:

  • Written materials, graphics or recordings of audio or video as copyrights.
  • Logos, branding and the like as trademarks.
  • Inventions that are protected by patents.
  • Formulas, methods, processes, designs, customer lists, pricing information, business plans or any other information that is valuable to competitors because it is not widely known are protected as trade secrets.

What should I do?

Protect our intellectual property and respect that of others. Much of what we find on the Internet is copyrighted and we may not reproduce it without the owner’s permission. Copyrighted material may or may not have a notice with the © symbol.

Protect our trade secrets and be careful with your communications with competitors. Disclosure of a trade secret diminishes its value, so keep our business information confidential, and share internally on a need-to-know basis.

  • Do not discuss business with our competitors, as doing so risks an accidental disclosure or an accusation that we’re attempting to access trade secrets from a competitor, which can be considered theft.
  • Only authorized persons may handle outside requests for Coty information, including the media or market advisors.
  • Consult with Corporate Affairs or the Global Compliance Officer if you have questions about what information you may disclose.

Report intellectual property violations. Notify the local Compliance Officer, the Global Compliance Officer or the Coty Hotline if you think there has been a violation of intellectual property known as an “infringement.” This may include the unauthorized disclosure or publication of:

  • Pictures of Coty products, displays, packaging and advertising.
  • Other creative, financial, branding, employment or other company information.
  • Projects that you have worked on or pictures of products that you helped to develop, as these things are the intellectual property of Coty.

Think before you post to a website or social media. Posting information, graphics or other material could disclose trade secrets or other confidential information, violate intellectual property rights or both. Check with your manager, HR Business Partner, Global Compliance or Corporate Affairs first.
